Hampton Man Dies After Bike Crash On Ocean Boulevard; Cops Say He Wasn’t Wearing A Helmet

HAMPTON, NH — Police in Hampton are investigating a fatal e-bike crash early Sunday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., police were called to the area of Ocean Boulevard and Boars Head Terrace to investigate a bicycle crash. When they arrived, they found the rider on the ground, suffering from serious bodily injury due to the crash, Hampton Police Chief Alex Reno said.

The rider was identified as James Gallagher, 68, of Hampton.

“In the course of the investigation,” he said, “officers determined that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Gallagher had been traveling northbound (on) the southbound shoulder at the time of the crash. It was also determined that Gallagher was not wearing a protective helmet at the time of the crash.”

Gallagher was taken to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital by Hampton Fire and Rescue in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries later that morning, Reno said.

The case remains under investigation.

“This is an absolute tragedy,” Reno added, “and our thoughts are with Mr. Gallagher’s family and friends at this time.”
