Hundreds to Enjoy Annual School Picnic Today

Local students will get in the summer spirit thanks to a popular annual event that will shorten the school day.

Good morning, Hampton and North Hampton. Here are five things you need to know for Tuesday, May 28:

 

1. Today's Top Thing: Winnacunnet High School's annual schoolwide picnic is from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The day includes student election speeches, and students for $2 will get a hot dog, soda and/or water, chips, watermelon and ice cream.

The event will condense the school day. Here's the revised schedule, per the WHS website:

Block 1 - 7:45-8:35 a.m.
Block 2 - 8:39-9:29 a.m.
Block 3 - 9:33-10:28 a.m.
Block 4 - 10:32-11:01 a.m.
Block 5 - 11:05-11:35 a.m.

3. What Else Is Happening Today? The North Hampton Zoning Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. at North Hampton Town Hall, and the Hampton Conservation Commission will meet at 7 p.m. at Hampton Town Hall.

4. This Day in History: On this day in 1961, the British newspaper "The London Observer" published British lawyer Peter Benenson's article "The Forgotten Prisoners" on its front page, launching the Appeal for Amnesty 1961—a campaign calling for the release of all people imprisoned in various parts of the world because of the peaceful expression of their beliefs.
