Local Public Parks Off Limits Wednesday After EEE Found

Several areas of town will be closed as mosquito spraying begins in the wake of positive EEE test results.

North Hampton officials are reminding residents that several public parks are off limits Wednesday night due to mosquito spraying after mosquitos tested positive for Eastern Equine Enchephalitis (EEE) last week.

"Spraying to control adult mosquitoes will take place at the School, Dearborn Park, and Knowles Field on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.," wrote Town Adminsitrator Paul Apple in a release on Friday. "People may not be present during spraying."

The EEE-infected mosquitos were found at Knowles Field, which is off Birch Road, according to Apple.

He said the insecticide CrossCheck Plus (bifenthrin 7.9%) will be used to control adult mosquitoes, and that backpack sprayers would be used. Apple also urged local residents use caution to prevent the spread of EEE.

"Common sense is your best defense against EEE," he said. "The fact that there are mosquitoes that tested positive for EEE in North Hampton means that you should take reasonable precautions until a killing frost occurs."

Apple also advised residents to stay indoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are the most present and to wear long sleeve shirts and pants when outdoors. He said residents can consult the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services website for more tips and safety recommendations.

No townwide road spraying is scheduled and that Dragon Mosquito Control, Inc. of Brentwood will be the applicator for Wednesday's spraying. Apple said that residents may call the 734-4144 for further information regarding spray dates, times, locations, insecticides, precautions, West Nile Virus, EEE and other concerns.
