Winnacunnet, Hampton Falls Teams Move On to State Destination ImagiNation Finals

The top teams from regionals, including two Hampton-area squads, will head to the state finals on April 6 in Salem.

More than 1,100 students competed in Kingston (Sanborn Regional High School) and East Swanzey (Monadnock Regional High School) Saturday in the final week of New Hampshire Destination Imagination Regional Tournaments.

Student teams of up to seven demonstrated their creativity competing in open-ended challenges that focused on the arts, science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and service learning. “DI” teams must solve their challenge without help of others.

Teams were evaluated on results, teamwork, presentation, creativity and innovation. Top teams advanced by Challenge and age level. Teams that advanced will compete at Destination Imagination State Finals at Salem High School on Saturday, April 6.

Dover Middle School, Challenge: In Disguise, Middle Level

This team wowed the appraisers with their seemingly flawless performance and conceptual creativity.  The non verbal communication and music throughout left no questions about the story line and evoked the essence of scene.  The masks, which were constructed out of logs, were very impressive, particularly the morphing mask that transformed into a step stool! To top it all off, the polished scenery completely flipped and a team made car “worthy of James Bond” drove under the set, surprising the appraisers and audience alike.  Much like this teams camouflaged disguises this performance was truly a work of art.

Pinkerton Academy, Challenge: Change in RealiTee, Secondary Level

The appraisal team was blown away by the improv techniques used by this team in the preparation phase of the challenge.  The team immediately broke into 3 groups to brainstorm the beginning, middle, and end of the performance.  The team then reformed to integrate the pieces.  It was an incredibly efficient approach to brainstorming using improv techniques.

South Range Elementary – Barnwell, ROY G BIV/Rising Stars

With extravagant costumes that were rich in detail this team put together a performance  that had a humorous story which had us laughing out loud. The solution integrated every element of the challenge with the rainbow theme in a uniquely memorable way.  These rising stars sang and danced their way to the pot of gold at the end of their rainbow.

Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering, execution, performance

Timberlane Middle School, Challenge: Wind Visible, Middle Level

The functionality of the engineering and exquisite detail of this weeping willow tree made this kinetic art piece memorable.  It worked flawlessly and was an absolute masterpiece of craftsmanship.  The tree showed extensive evidence of refinement and demonstrated excellent use of materials.  The appraisal team was mesmerized by the innovation and artfulness that came together in a way that was simply brilliant.

Special Awards

DaVinci Award for outstanding creativity.

This award is given for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking, and/or for outstanding creativity (not skill or talent).

Griffin Memorial School, Litchfield, Challenge: Rising Stars!

The team demonstrated a unique artistic interpretation of a rainbow by using different colored fruits to represent Roy G Biv and in doing so made a delicious snack for all. The appraiser won’t soon forget this team’s colorful creativity.

Hollis DI, Challenge: In Disguise, Secondary Level

This team’s evocative performance tackled the universal theme of Nature versus human enterprise. A tree elegantly portrayed a natural ecosystem with falling leaves that showed destruction resulting from human activity. A forest nymph wore an intricate flower mask made of over 900 origami pieces which came apart under the control of an elaborate electromagnetic device as a metaphor for the death of the forest. The appraisers were moved by this unique and beautiful artistic vision.

Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering, execution, performance

Conant High School, Challenge: Wind Visible, Secondary Level

This team just about had it all. From an innovative pulley system that simulated tree growth to a memorable integration of art and life from the Dust Bowl days. The appraisers were impressed to learn the environmental effects of clear cutting. This team successfully incorporated risky and complex mechanisms thus showing their extraordinary skill of engineering and design.

Hollis, Challenge: In The Zone, Middle Level

This "In the Zone" team created a highly-sophisticated launching device utilizing wood, metal, a bungee cord, convex glass lenses, infrared light and microcontrollers. The appraisers were very impressed with the team’s “The Mean-Machine” launching device. This device coupled with the technologically-innovative steering system was able to send their vehicles into the scoring zone with impressive results.

Milford, Challenge: Rising Stars! Elementary Level

Our appraisers have seen a lot of beautiful rainbows in our time but never before had we seen one come together before our eyes, in the form of a mixed media mobile to which each team member contributed an arc of color. The team also WoWed us with their foldable and changeable scenery which evolved throughout their performance.

Conant High School, Challenge: In Disguise, Secondary Level

A classic story with both mechanical and plot line twists, this team’s three faced dwarf mask and lifting coffin demonstrated their multiple technical skills and talents. Their seamless performance, humor and the prince’s Hershey kiss left the appraisers wanting more.

Chesterfield School, Challenge: In Disguise, Middle Level

This team’s pop-out storybook backdrop with pages that turned to reveal multiple scenes with 3-D elements drew the appraisers into the fairytale. The appraisers were impressed with the team’s use of recycled materials. Trash bags became a beautiful dress; soda cans and egg cartons became a rotating clock tower. The team’s amazing masks, including a scary witch with moving lips, brought their story to life.

Milford Middle School, Challenge: Twist-O-Rama, Middle Level

The appraisers and audience were quickly propelled into this skit. The team’s cohesive and well-crafted performance charmed the appraisers. Their panda costumes and working airplane propeller added a great dimension to the performance. The team’s use of humor and word play made this a memorable experience.
