Police: Route 1 to Reopen Late Thursday After High Winds Topple Utility Pole

Expect traffic delays as crews work to remedy issues caused by high winds and falling trees, including one by Walgreens.

Officials are estimating Lafayette Road (Route 1) will be closed until about 8:30 p.m. Thursday due to a downed utility pole near Walgreens.

Hampton Police Lt. Dan Gidley said crews are on the scene and working to repair the issue, which was caused around 1:30 p.m. Thursday when high winds took out a nearby tree, which in turn fell on the power lines and took out the pole.

Emergency radio communications indicated at about 1:48 p.m. that the pole  "snapped right off" and that traffic would have to be rerouted through the area.
