What Can Be Done to Clean Up the Beach?

The Hampton Beach community has been abuzz recently after another wave of Fourth of July tourists once again left a smattering of trash across an area known for its cleanliness and pristine sand.

Millions are spent each year cleaning and protecting Hampton Beach and the surrounding business and residential communities, although many residents have called for more action to be taken to help prevent trash buildups along the coastline.

What do you think can be done? Please tell us in the comments below.

Amy Bassett, the public information officer for the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation, said there likely is no simple solution to the problem.

Bassett said other state beaches, including New Hampshire's other superstar beach, Wallis Sands in Rye, utilize a "carry in, carry out" waste policy. It's effective in those locations, although Bassett said the program would be costly and impractical for Hampton Beach because there are far too many entrances and access points to the sand.

"It's huge," said Bassett. "It's a huge amount of space. Thousands of people flock there every day. In the end, it's really hard to manage 'carry in, carry out.' That would be the idea... but in this space it's too big of a space to manage."
