Rollover Crash And 4 Vehicle Accident Backs Up I-93 North For Miles

Four teenagers in an Audi A4 that landed on its roof escaped serious injury. The accident was near the Manchester and Londonderry town line.

MANCHESTER, NH — New Hampshire State Police, Manchester Fire, and AMR ambulance responded to a call of a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 93 North near mile marker 17.2 that involved a vehicle on its roof Saturday.

Initial reports indicated there were four people trapped and the vehicle was on fire. Manchester dispatched additional resources due to the possibility of a fire and multiple people trapped when the call came in at about 12:40 p.m.

While en route, responders were advised of a second crash involving four vehicles about 1 mile south of the initial accident. Additional resources were dispatched to the second accident, including NH DOT to assist.

MFD Engine 3 arrived at the rollover and confirmed there was no fire, and the occupants were not entrapped. AMR transported one teenage male to Elliot Hospital. Three teens who remained at the scene were given clearance by their parents not to be transported to the hospital.

The second accident appeared to have two vehicles on the left of I-93 North and two additional vehicles on the right side. Firefighters evaluated several people but no one is believed to have been transported from the scene. Two of the four vehicles had heavy damage and required tow trucks.

The accidents were just north of the Londonderry line, and traffic quickly backed up into Londonderry as far south as the Exit 5 onramp,

State police say witness statements and roadway evidence, indicated the operator of the Audi was driving at a high rate of speed and changing lanes while passing vehicles in heavy traffic.

The operator braked and swerved and was unable to remain in control of the vehicle, possibly striking at least one other vehicle before leaving the roadway and rolling multiple times. The vehicle was occupied by the juvenile operator and three passengers.

The second accident appears to have been caused by traffic stopping and vehicles colliding with the vehicles stopped in traffic.

New Hampshire State Police is handling the accident investigation and was seen removing bottles of what appear to be alcohol that had been thrown from the vehicle as it rolled over.

State police verified the rolled-over vehicle was registered in New Hampshire, it is unknown where the occupants were from. Speed appears to be a factor in the rollover, but the investigation is continuing. Due to the driver and occupants being minors, no names will be released by authorities.

The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Trooper Skafidas at NH State Police Headquarters at (603) 223-4381.
