Here are five things you should know as you start your Friday.
1. February already? Not sure how it happened, but Jan. has come and gone. Are you planning to run for town office? Filing for offices happens this month and petitioned warrant articles are also due. Get a full look at upcoming important dates regarding Town Meeting. Deliberative session is in March, election in April.
2. My anti-Valentine. February is also the month we celebrate Valentine's Day. This year, the new youth librarian, Liz Gotauco, has organized an anti-Valentine's Day party for teens at the Merrimack Public Library. Sick of Valentine Day’s gooey commercials, drippy love songs, and hearts everywhere?! Then go to the Merrimack Public Library’s Teen Anti-Valentine's Party on Feb. 13 from 4-5 p.m. to UNcelebrate! Teens ages 12-18 will get to create black duct-tape roses, deface romance novel covers, compete for prizes in break-up song trivia and other contests, nosh on sweets and snacks, and more! Teens are encouraged (but not required) to wear black in lieu of traditional Valentines Day colors. Please register for this event!

3. Ice Rink status. The Department of Public Works announced Thursday the public ice rink on O'Gara Drive was closed temporarily due to warm temperatures and rain. The return of freezing temperatures should help speed up the re-opening. Status updates are posted on the DPW Facebook page.
4. Fun Fact. Did you know: Crickets make good thermometers – to get a rough estimate of the temperature, count the number of times a cricket chirps in 15 seconds and add 40.
