At the Library: Cupcake Wars, Author Skype and More

Events at the library from July 15-19.

Each week, there are a number of free community activities at the Merrimack Public Library for residents of all ages. From book groups and story times to special evening presentations and opportunities to brush up on reading skills. Plus, during the summer there are whole lot of extras that come as part of the summer reading program. Online registration for activities is available at MerrimackLibrary.org. You can also register in person or by phone at 424-5021. Adult library card needed to register for activities.

Preschool Storytime (Drop-in) 

Monday, July 15, 2013, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

A 45 minute school-readiness literacy class with a weekly theme. Some activities include reading picture books, making crafts or playing simple games. These activities are designed to teach children listening comprehension skills, letter and shape recognition, new vocabulary words, as well as improve gross and fine motor skills and introduce helpful social skills. This program is open to Merrimack Library cardholders ages 3-6 years. No registration is needed; just drop-in.

Build a Model Rocket 

Monday July 15, 2013, 3-4 p.m.

Paul Linn of our local model shop Model Aircraft Fabricators will lead kids aged 8+ in building a simple but snazzy model rocket to keep. All materials will be provided. Please register with an adult Merrimack card.

Family Book Group 

Monday, July 15, 2013, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

This monthly book group is for ages 8+ with an adult. Sign-up and pick up this month's book at the library, and join us at this monthly meeting to discuss the story, make a complimentary craft, and enjoy some snacks!

This month's book is The Liberation of Gabriel King by K.L. Going. Extra copies are available in the Children's Room.

Never Land Pirates Party 

Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 3-4 p.m.

Shiver me timbers, it's a pirate party! Dig for treasure, walk the plank, hunt for crocodile, and enjoy some swashbuckling stories! For children ages 3+ and a caregiver.

Author Skype with Susan McMartin  

Wednesday, July 13, 2013, 7-8:30 p.m.

Television and feature writer, Susan McMartin, will be Skyping with us from Studio City, CA to talk about the writing process and her recently published book. We'll project the visit on our big screen TV so it can be fully enjoyed by the entire audience.

Susan is currently executive story editor for CBS’s Two and a Half Men and is in pre-production for her feature film, Cook, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Susan's other writing credits include; Californication, Gary Unmarried, Another World, Port Charles as well as the feature film, Son-In-Law. Her weekly blog,Studio City Mom, has been the number one column for Studio City Patch and is just about to celebrate it's third year on the website. Susan's column shares honest, edgy, humorous stories of her life as a single mom working in the entertainment business and almost always leaves the reader crying and laughing.

Most recently, Susan self-published her book, Understanding the Fall, which entirely through verse, chronicles the story of a young girl growing up with an alcoholic parent and is based on Susan's own experience of growing up with alcoholism. Copies of her novel are available at the Circulation Desk.

Whether you are a writer or a fan of Two and a Half Men, this event will appeal to a wide audience. Registration is helpful for planning purposes.

Mother Goose Storytime (Drop-in) 

Thursday, July 18, 2013, 10:15-10:45 a.m.

A 30 minute early literacy class of stories, fingerplays, rhymes and songs. For children ages 6-24 months with an adult caregiver; no registration required. This program is open to Merrimack Library cardholders.

Merrimack Cupcake Wars 

Thursday, July 18, 2013, 3:-4 p.m. 

Teens and tweens ages 10-18 are invited to show off their cake decorating skills at Merrimack Cupcake Wars. You'll learn some tricks of the cake decorating trade to get you started. We'll provide all the tools, you provide the talent. Prizes awarded for the Most Creative and Most Delicious Looking.

Teen Writers Group

Thursday, July 18, 2013, 3:30-5 p.m. 

Do you like to write? Do you like to listen to stories? Would you like to learn about story craft, share your poetry, or just have fun using your imagination? Then join our Teen Writers Group! Come ready to read or just stop in to relax and listen.

On the first Thursday of the month we'll meet in the historic Lowell Room and on the third Thursday of the month we'll meet at the table in the Teen Area on the main level.

This group is open to Merrimack residents in grades 6-12. Registration is helpful for planning purposes but not required.

Storytime in the Park
