Brown Water This Month? Don't Be Alarmed

Milford will begin flushing fire hydrants next week to maintain water quality.

The Town of Milford begins its annual fall hydrant flushing program on Monday, and residents need to know what to expect

Hydrant flushing will begin on Monday, Oct. 15 in East Milford and continue through North and West Milford until Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Milford Water Utilities Department flushes the town's fire hydrants twice a year to ensure that they are in good working order at all times.

Flushing every six months helps maintain water quality throughout the distribution system, according to the department. In spring each hydrant is inspected to ensure it was not damaged during the winter months. Each hydrant is rechecked in the fall and any necessary repairs are made before winter sets in.

While flushing hydrants near your home, you can expect to see a temporary discoloration of the water in your home. This is because high velocity flow scours rust particles from the inside of the water mains. Most of this rust is flushed from the pipes, but a small amount will remain suspended in the water.

This rust is harmless and the water may be safely consumed and should dissipate quickly. After your area is flushed, the department recommends running your cold water to flush out the service line to your house.

Residents should know that the rust will stain light-colored laundry. Once hydrant flushing is done in your neighborhood, please be sure that both your hot and cold water are rust-free before running your washer.
