Milford Woman Stole Medicaid Mileage Funds: NH AG

CONCORD, NH — Attorney General John M. Formella announced that Erma Hasu, 33, of Milford pleaded guilty to the theft of Medicaid funds.

Between Sept. 1, 2021, and Sept. 30, 2022, Hasu submitted fraudulent claims for mileage reimbursement as part of New Hampshire Medicaid’s Family and Friends Mileage Reimbursement Program. On June 24, she pleaded guilty to class A misdemeanor theft by deception, Michael Garrity, the director of communications, said.

The Merrimack County Superior Court sentenced her to serve 12 months in the Merrimack County House of Corrections, fully suspended for five years, and ordered her to pay $2,293.52 in restitution to the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. She has been barred from future participation in the Family and Friends Mileage Reimbursement Program.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Thomas T. Worboys and Assistant Attorney General Andrew Yourell of the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit prosecuted this case. Financial Investigator Timothy Brackett and Investigator John Lannon, also of the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, investigated this matter based on a referral from AmeriHealth Caritas New Hampshire’s Special Investigations Unit.

The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigates and prosecutes fraud by healthcare providers who treat Medicaid beneficiaries. Healthcare providers include, but are not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, ambulance companies, and anyone else who is paid for providing healthcare services to Medicaid beneficiaries. The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit receives 75 percent of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under a grant award totaling $987,576 for Federal fiscal year (FY) 2024. The remaining 25 percent, totaling $329,191 for FY 2024, is funded by the State of New Hampshire.
