Remembering NH's Iraq War Casualties

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week – on March 19, 2003 – and although officially over, the fighting continues.

By one count, the war in Iraq is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 23 from New Hampshire. From the CNN war casualties web site:

  • Staff Sgt. Edmund L. Lo, 23, of Salem. Killed when a roadside bomb that his explosive ordinance disposal team was trying to disarm detonated in Samarra, Iraq on June 13, 2009.
  • Spc. David S. Stelmat, 27, of Littleton. One of three soldiers killed when their vehicle encountered a roadside bomb in Baghdad, Iraq on March 22, 2008.
  • Chief Petty Officer Nathan H. Hardy, 29, of Durham. One of two Navy SEALs who died of wounds suffered from small arms fire during combat operations in Iraq on February 4, 2008.
  • Pfc. Juctin R.P. McDaniel, 19, of Andover. Died of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident in Taji, Iraq on Dec. 17, 2007.
  • Capt. Jonathan D. Grassbaugh, 25, of Hampstead. One of four soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their unit in Zaghiniya, Iraq on April 7, 2007.
  • Spc. Justin A. Rollins, 22, of Newport. One of six soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their unit during combat operations in Samarra, Iraq on March 5, 2007.
  • Spc. Toby R. Olsen, 28, of Manchester. One of four soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their Humvee in Karmah, Anbar province, Iraq on Jan. 20, 2007.
  • Spc. Matthew J. Stanley, 22, of Wolfeboro. One of three soldiers killed when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb while on mounted patrol in Taji, Iraq on Dec. 16, 2006.
  • Lance Cpl. Ryan T. McCaughn, 19, of Manchester. Killed while conducting combat operations in Ramadi, Anbar province, Iraq on Nov. 7, 2006.
  • Cpl. Nicholas A. Arvanitis, 22, of Salem. Died of injuries suffered when he encountered enemy fire in Bayji, Iraq on Oct. 6, 2006.
  • Spc. Matthew E. Schneider, 23, of Gorham. Died of a non-combat related cause in Ramadi, Iraq on Aug. 28, 2006.
  • Sgt. Daniel Gionet, 23, of Pelham. One of two soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their M1A2 tank during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq on June 6, 2006.
  • Capt. Douglas A. DiCenzo, 30, of Plymouth. One of two soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their Humvee during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq on May 25, 2006.
  • Pfc. Nicholas Cournoyer, 25, of Gilmanton. One of four soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their Humvee during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq on May 18, 2006.
  • Lance Cpl. Robert L. Moscillo, 21, of Salem. Killed while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Falluja, Anbar province, Iraq on May 1, 2006.
  • Pfc. George R. Roehl Jr., 21, of Manchester. One of three soldiers killed when a roadside bomb detonated near their Bradley Fighting Vehicle and they subsequently came under small-arms fire during combat operations in Taji, Iraq on April 11, 2006.
  • Cpl. Timothy M. Gibson, 23, of Merrimack/Hillsborough. One of 30 Marines killed along with a Navy corpsman when their CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed near Ar Rutba in western Iraq on Jan. 26, 2005.
  • Lance Cpl. Adam R. Brooks, 20, of Manchester. One of two Marines killed by enemy action in Iskandariya, Babil province, Iraq on Nov. 28, 2004.
  • Spc. Alan J. Burgess, 24, of Landaff. Killed when a car bomb detonated near his patrol vehicle in Mosul, Iraq on Oct. 15, 2004.
  • Spc. Jeremy F. Regnier, 22, of Littleton. Died when a roadside bomb detonated near his patrol in Baghdad, Iraq on Oct. 13, 2004.
  • Master Sgt. Richard L. Ferguson, 45, of Conway. Killed when the military vehicle he was riding in rolled over in Samarra, Iraq on March 30, 2004.
  • Sgt. Randy S. Rosenberg, 23, of Berlin. Killed when a car bomb detonated in Khalidiya, Iraq on Jan. 24, 2004.
  • Sgt. 1st Class Robert E. Rooney, 43, of Nashua. Died of injuries received when he was struck by a forklift at Shuabai Port in Kuwait on Sept. 25, 2003.
