5 Things: Navy WAVE Louise Rankin Sings From the Heart

What better way to start "real" Memorial Day than enjoying Louise Rankin singing with gusto.

1. Decoration Day: That's how it began, before it was Memorial Day, and if you are of a certain age, you remember that May 30 is "real" Memorial Day. To mark the day you won't want to miss the videos and photos that accompany this story, Students Honor Veterans During Memorial Day Ceremony. I wanted to make sure you got to listen to Louise Rankin, 90, a proud Navy WAVE, sing her song, so I've uploaded the video here. For those who don't know your military history, WAVES – (for Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) were an all-female division of the Navy during WWII.

2.  Studio Mark Emile Anniversary Deal: We saw this post by Main Street photographer Mark Emile and had to share - $5 sessions, a great deal for you and your family. Click here for more information.

3. Vote for Nashua in This Online Competition: On Wednesday we posted a story about an initiative through Benjamin Moore, and how Nashua's in the running to win a Main Street paint makeover, but not without your daily votes. Here's a link to the story.  Don't worry; we'll remind you until the contest ends on June 30.

4. Doogie Houser: All Growed Up: Reuters reports that Neil Patrick Harris, star of sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," –  who by the way will always be Doogie to me, is hosting the 65th annual Emmy Awards in September. Way to go, Kiddo!

5. Ibuprofen Hurts Your Heart: Oxford University researchers say two common painkillers, ibuprofen and diclofenac, can slightly increase the risk of heart problems if taken in high doses for a long time. People with severe arthritis, who often take the drugs, may feel relief from their ailments. And while the risk is considered "acceptable," patients should be told of the elevated risk to their heart. Read more here.
