5 Things: More Teens Smoking eCigs

1. Got Teens? Stop Yelling: Parents who yell, insult, or swear in an effort to correct bad behavior may perpetuate the behavior and increase a child's risk for depression, new research suggests. The study, published in the Sept. 4 issue of the journal Child Development, found that nearly half of parents (45- 46 percent of mothers and 42 - 43 percent of fathers) reported using harsh verbal language to discipline their 13- and 14-year-old children. The study is among the first to examine the impact of parental verbal discipline on teen behavior and depression, and the research suggested a reciprocal relationship between negative verbal discipline by parents and bad teen behavior. 2. If You Know What DWTS Stands For, Read On: Even if you don't, you may be amused to know who this season's "Dancing With the Stars" dancing stars will be, as announced Thursday on GMA (that's for "Good Morning, America!" FYI (for your information!): Valerie Harper, "Jersey Shore" star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi; "Glee's" Amber Riley; Leah Remini of "The King of Queens" and "The Talk"; Jack Osbourne; singer Christina Milian, actress Elizabeth Berkley Lauren; Bill Nye, the beloved science guy; comedian Bill Engvall; former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson; "High School Musical" star Corbin Bleu; and Brant Daugherty of "Army Wives" and "Pretty Little Liars."
3. More Teens Trying eCigs: Last year, 10 percent of high school students say they tried e-cigarettes, up from 4.7 percent in 2011, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey released Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A doubling also occurred among U.S. middle school students saying they've experimented with e-cigarettes — from 1.4 percent to 2.7 percent — and similar spikes in teen usage were found in the 2013 Florida Youth Tobacco Survey, bad news, says CDC Director Tom Frieden.
