5 Things: NH Moose Population Waning?

1. Tiny Frog Hears with No Ears: Scientists have discovered how a tiny frog, which is called Gardiner’s Seychelle frog, can hear without ears. The frogs can only be found in the Seychelle islands and they are just one centimeter in length, (0.39370 of an inch.) These tiny amphibians can hear with the combination of their mouth chamber and tissue to transmit sounds to their inner ears. The findings were reported in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Read more here.

2. A Walking Shark? A new species of "walking" shark has been discovered in a reef off a remote Indonesian island. You can see how the  bamboo shark uses his fins to propel itself along the sandy reef, via this YouTube video. 

3. Got Esteem Issues?:  A new study suggests a man's self-esteem is likely to suffer if his female partner is more successful than he is, the Los Angeles Times reports. Researchers conducted their study, published online in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, on heterosexual couples in the U.S. and the Netherlands. While the women's self-esteem was seemingly unaffected, the men's suffered when their partner was successful. You can read more here.

4. Wine Helps Depression? Spanish researchers say a glass of wine a day just might help prevent depression. Their study of more than 5,000 people found those who drank two to seven glasses of wine a week were the least likely to have depression symptoms, compared to non-drinkers. However, mental health experts say this could be because moderate drinkers tend to have a better social life, which helps them avoid depression. 5. NH Moose Population Waning: If you happen to see a moose, don't be surprised if it's sporting a collar. He or she is not a pet, but part of a new study of the Granite State's declining moose population. New Hampshire's moose population has dropped dramatically from 7,600 to 4,400. Read more here.
