Ayotte's Approval Rating Down
New poll shows the senator's popularity plunge coincides with recent vote against background checks for gun purchases.

A new poll has New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R) down 15 points from where her previous approval rating was six months ago. The Public Policy Poll survey was taken following Ayotte's recent vote against requiring background checks for firearms purchases.
According to PPP survey results, Ayotte has a negative approval rating with 44 percent of voters giving her good marks and 46 percent disapproving. In October, Ayotte had a 48 percent approval with 35 percent disapproving.

Currently 75 percent of New Hampshire voters – including 95 percent of Democrats, 74 percent of Independents, and 56 percent of Republicans – say they support background checks; 50 percent of voters in the state say Ayotte's 'no' vote will make them less likely to support her in a future election, compared to just 23 percent who consider it to be a positive.
The Huffington Post features the Ayotte story today on its Politics page, and reports that the 11-point surge in disapproval threatens Ayotte's 2016 reelection, when she could face Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan. Ayotte won her 2010 race by 23 points, but in a hypothetical matchup against Hassan, trails 46-44.
