Nashua Firefighters Challenged By Heavy Clutter In Basement Fire

No working smoking detectors and a large amount of clutter created dangerous conditions in Nashua house fire Sunday.

NASHUA, NH — Nashua Fire Rescue responded to Edinburgh Drive for a building fire Sunday. Engine 6, Engine 3, Ladder 3, the Deputy Chief, Engine 1, and an AMR Ambulance responded.

NFR Engine 6 arrived and reported smoke showing from a one-story wood-frame single-family dwelling. They investigated further located a fire in the cellar.

Engine 2 and Special Hazards 1 were added to the response to the working fire.

The only occupant home at the time of the fire was out of the building when firefighters arrived. AMR ambulance was at the scene if needed by the occupant or firefighters working on the fire.

Fire crews entered the basement and were able to knock down the main body of the fire according to Deputy Chief Glenn MacDonald. A ladder truck was set up to for ventilation while firefighters searched the building to be assured everyone was out of the building.

MacDonald said that the fire was isolated to the basement which suffered major fire damage. The house had smoke damage throughout the structure. MacDonald said limited access and ventilation to the cellar created hazards to the firefighters as well as severe clutter conditions. There were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters.

Nashua police assisted with traffic and informational gathering at the scene. They are assisting the Nashua Fire Marshal’s Office with the fire investigation. At this time the cause and origin of the fire is undetermined.
