Nashua Garden Club: 'Growing Giant Pumpkins' with Dick Young

The Nashua Garden Club will hold its October meeting Wednesday, October  2, 2013, 7 to 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester St., Nashua, NH
Program:  "Growing Giant Pumpkins" by Dick Young
Dick Young will speak about his interest and experience in growing giant pumpkins!  He has had a vegetable garden in Nashua for over 30 years and started growing giant pumpkins when his children were growing up.  His interest grew each year and eventually he attended a weigh off at the Topsfield Fair and was hooked on this highly competitive hobby.  He joined the New Hampshire and New England grower's associations and in 2008 took his own giant pumpkin weighing 594 pounds to Topsfield.  Even if one does not grow a pumpkin big enough to justify the effort to take it to the fair, growing a pumpkin of several hundred pounds is quite a feat.  They are also great for carving as the walls of the pumpkin can be 3 to 6 inches thick.  This allow for creative 3 dimensional carving to show off to your neighbors and friends at Halloween. Dick learned the basics of gardening from his father who had an impressive vegetable and flower garden in  back of their 3 decker on Main St. in the heavily populated city of Everett, MA.  Once Dick had his own home and land, he continued the tradition.
The Nashua Garden Club meets the first Wednesday of each month at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester St., starting at 7 p.m.
