City Firefighters Take to Twitter

Soon city residents will be able to follow the Portsmouth Fire Department on Twitter @PortsmouthNHFD.

Very soon city residents will be able to follow the Portsmouth Fire Department on Twitter after they launch the new handle @PortsmouthNHFD.

Portsmouth Fire Chief Steve Achilles said the department is set to launch its new Twitter page and handle in the next few days. When asked how the department will utilize its tweets, Achilles said they want to provide instant communication with city residents and visitors about emergency related events.

For example, Achilles said that when firefighters have to battle a large blaze like the on that gutted several Daniel Street businesses earlier this summer, city firefighters can tweet that it is happening and let people know about street closures. He said they have seen first hand how people will often turn to Social Media first to get the latest news about emergency events and by taking to Twitter, Achilles said the fire department can put out the right information at the outset of an event.

Achilles believes the city fire department's new Twitter account will be a valuable asset for everyone who uses it.
