City Remembers Those Who Served on Memorial Day
Hundreds of Portsmouth residents watched the annual Memorial Day parade and attended the ceremony at South Street Cemetery.
Portsmouth residents lined Market Square and Richard Avenue and cheered during Monday's annual Memorial Day Parade to honor all those who have served their country and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Portsmouth Police Honor Guard led the parade through downtown Portsmouth that included the Portsmouth High School Clippers Marching Band, the Portsmouth Middle School Marching Band, the Portsmouth Fire Department and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Honor Guard.
On what was a picture perfect, sunny day, city residents cheered military veterans and active duty soldiers and sailors who marched with first responders. At South Street Cemetery, Mayor Eric Spear and Navy Capt. William C. Greene, commander of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, made brief remarks before the Portsmouth Police Honor Guard fired a 21-gun salute followed by the playing of "Taps."
