Nearly 1,000 hot Portsmouth area residents converged on the Portsmouth Pool on day three of the heat wave.
Lines of city residents clutching beach towels and suntan lotion formed well before the pool's open swim at 1 p.m.
Some city residents wanted the city lifeguards to let them in early as temperatures climbed to the mid-90's.
Once they did enter the Peirce Island pool. They jumped right into the cool water.
Rus Wilson, director of the city's Recreation Department, said he expected a large turnout all say and into the evening, which is why city officials opted to keep the pool open until 7:15 p.m. On Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, the heat wave that continues to roast the Northeast may break on Saturday when some thunderstorms move into the region.
Until then Portsmouth area residents will continue to beat the heat any way they can. What follows is a video from the Peirce Island Pool.
