More Condos on Islington Street?

The developers of a proposed upscale condominium project on Islington Street released a conceptual image of what it would look like, if approved.

The drawing, which is on file at the city's Planning Department office at City Hall, shows two historic looking buildings with a federalist architectural design on the site where the Olde Port Traders is located now. It would also be located across the street from Goodwin Park.

According to city documents at the Board of Adjustment office, Dale and Sharyn Smith of North Hampton want to demolish the Olde Port Traders furniture store located at 275 Islington St. and build a multi-level residential complex that could house apartments or condos.

Previously, Portsmouth Principal Planner Nick Cracknell said that, if approved, the developers told him they want to demolish the one-level commercial building that is there now and build a multi-story residential building. But this project would not be the same as the residential condo development located at 51 Islington St. across from the Keefe House because that one has a mixed retail/residential component, he said.

Cracknell previously said the developer wants to also level a 2 1/2 story house located in the rear portion of the lot to square off the entire parcel located between Rockingham and Cornwall streets. He said the developer also wants to have underground parking, but city officials do not know yet how many units they intend to build.
