Extreme Cold Creates Beautiful 'Sea Smoke' Over Water In New Castle
Images created of Whaleback Light in -40 degree temps at sunrise visible from New Hampshire and Maine show a unique weather condition.
NEW CASTLE, NH — Incredibly cold weather set into the Northeast over the weekend and broke some records while making outdoor activities dangerous and miserable for many people.
Eric Snyder, a New Hampshire photographer with a history of recording beautiful landscapes, braved the extreme cold to show how beautiful conditions that are created by the extreme weather.
When air temperatures hit extreme lows over the ocean, “Sea Smoke” forms and create an incredibly beautiful sight.

According to Wiki, sea smoke forms when a light wind of very cold air mixes with a shallow layer of saturated warm air immediately above the warmer water. The warmer air is cooled beyond the dew point and can no longer hold as much water vapor, so the excess condenses out. The effect is similar to the "steam" produced over a hot bath, a hot drink, or even an exercising person.
Snyder photographed the Whaleback Light, which is a historic lighthouse marking the mouth of the Piscataqua River between New Castle, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine.
