Five Things You Need to Know Today, Dec. 14

1. Today's weather: The National Weather Service is calling for a sunny day, with a high near 46. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph. On Friday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low around 29. West wind around 8 mph.

2. Connie Bean has new owner: A live auction was held at the Connie Bean Recreation Center on Daniel Street on Thursday at 1 p.m. and the building now has a new owner. 

3. Temple Israel to celebrate Hanukkah: Today is the seventh day of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, which lasts for eight days. The Temple Israel on State Street is celebrating Hanukkah until Saturday, Dec. 15.

4. Enter Patch Deck the House contest: Portsmouth Patch is accepting submissions of photos and video from Portsmouth residents who believe they have the best holiday lights for the Patch Deck the House contest. The winner of the nationwide competition will receive $100,000 for their local school district and have their electricity bill paid for one month.

5. Santa now accepting letters: Kids who want to write a letter to Santa and want a response can write to Santa until Dec. 19. According to city officials, the letters should be sent to: Santa Claus at the North Pole, 155 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth, NH, 03801. Make sure the letter includes a full name and return address clearly printed so Santa can write back!
