Five Things You Need to Know Today, Jan. 3
City's new parking rates go into effect today; inauguration ceremony for Gov.-elect Maggie Hassan also today; another cold, frigid day in the forecast.
1. Today's weather: The National Weather Service is calling for a mostly sunny day, with a high near 23. Wind chill as low as -5. Northwest wind around 7 mph. On Thursday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. West wind 5 to 7 mph.
2. Christmas tree disposal: From Jan. 2 through Jan. 11, the city will collect Christmas trees from the curbside on trash and recycling days. Residents also may bring Christmas trees to the Recycling Center for disposal.
3. New parking rates Thursday: The city's new downtown tiered parking rates that will charge $1.50 per hour on the highest density streets go into effect on Thursday, Jan. 3.

4. Gov. Maggie Hassan inauguration: The inauguration ceremony for Gov.-elect Maggie Hassan will take place today at the New Hampshire State House in Concord and Patch will have full coverage.
5. Economic Development Commission meeting: The Portsmouth Economic Development Commission is scheduled to meet on Friday morning at City Hall in Conference Room A at 7:30 p.m.
