Five Things You Need to Know Today, Jan. 4
Bitter cold lets up; Christmas tree disposal continues; new downtown parking rates in effect.
1. Today's weather: The National Weather Service is calling for a mostly sunny day, with a high near 34. West wind 5 to 13 mph. On Friday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low around 25. West wind 10 to 13 mph.
2. Christmas tree disposal: From Jan. 2 through Jan. 11, the city will collect Christmas trees from the curbside on trash and recycling days. Residents also may bring Christmas trees to the Recycling Center for disposal.
3. New parking rates Thursday: The city's new downtown tiered parking rates that will charge $1.50 per hour on the highest density streets went into effect on Thursday, Jan. 3.

4. Gov. Maggie Hassan inauguration: Gov. Maggie Hassan was officially sworn in as New Hampshire's 81st governor at the New Hampshire State House on Thursday. Check out Patch's coverage of the ceremony.
5. Economic Development Commission meeting: The Portsmouth Economic Development Commission is scheduled to meet on Friday morning at City Hall in Conference Room A at 7:30 a.m.
