Jennifer Lee to UNH Grads: 'Ban Self Doubt'
Follow tomorrow's leaders today as they graduate from the University of New Hampshire.
"Frozen" screenwriter and director Jennifer Lee, commencement speaker at the University of New Hampshire on May 17, urged graduates to ban self doubt.
Lee, Class of 1992, said when she was first asked to deliver the address, one of her thoughts was, "I'm not good enough to be the commencement speaker."
It was, she said, a glimpse into self doubt that stretched back to when she was bullied as a child. She recalled growing beyond it with a good friend, the loss of a loved one in a boating accident, and blossoming at UNH.
Lee spoke of how she tamped down self doubt as she pursued a career in film, and how she recognizes that she isn't perfect. "There isn't even a subway line to 'perfect' from where I live," she said.
"Self doubt is one of the most destructive forces. It's consuming and cruel," she said. "My hope today is that we can collectively ban it. ... Please know that, from here on out, you are enough and, dare I say, more than enough."
