PORTSMOUTH, NH —Members of the public are invited to attend a meeting to discuss the upcoming Islington Street reconstruction project. The project's contractor, Severino Trucking, will join city staff in discussing the expected impacts on residents, including traffic issues and work schedule. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Levenson Room of the Portsmouth Public Library.
Islington Street reconstruction is set to begin during the first week of May. According to the Department of Public Works, it will be a large step in revitalizing the west end neighborhood. The scope of the project is Islington Street from the area of Spinney Road to Dover Street, as well as Columbia Street and Columbia Court. Workers will replace all utilities, reconstruct the road, install curbing and sidewalks, and improve landscaping.
A considerable part of the project is making Islington Street area more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. Work will include traffic signals, bicycle/pedestrian facilities, potential curb extensions, crosswalk designs, sidewalks, and marked areas for buses to pull over. Re-aligned intersections and other traffic calming measures are also in the plans, according to public works.
Those with comments or concerns about the design of the project may contact Portsmouth Parking and Transportation Engineer Eric Eby at 603-766-1415 or email ebeby@cityofportsmouth.com.
