Missing Memorial Bridge Panel Recovered

The panel was knocked loose when an oil tanker hit the bridge on Friday morning.

Divers were able to locate a panel that was knocked loose from the Memorial Bridge when an oil tanker ran into it early Friday morning.

William Boynton of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation said the 10,000-pound panel was floated to the surface with airbags and lifted out of the Piscataqua River by a crane on a barge on Saturday morning. He said damage assessment continues, and more panels may have to be removed for repairs.

The Memorial Bridge will be closed to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic at night this week for previously scheduled maintenance. The closure is needed to continue the work on adjustments to the guiderail on the towers. The closures are in effect through March 14, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
