NH's Hippie Rank is Far Out, Man
Co-ops, pot and Grateful Dead land New Hampshire a surprising index score. Thanks a lot, Baby Boomers?
Far out, man: New Hampshire is the third "most hippie" state in America, according to a unique ranking formula devised by Estately.
The real estate search site cobbled together four variables to gauge the state index for hippies and squares.
They are: the number of communes and intentional communities per capita in each state; the number of food co-ops per capita, the number of local Etsy stores per capita selling hemp, patchouli and tie-dye products, and the percentage of Facebook users who express interest in the following: Grateful Dead, PHISH, cannabis, tie-dye, peace, LSD, Bob Dylan, and hippies.

Which states were ahead of New Hampshire? Vermont was ranked the most hippie state, followed by Maine.
Here is the Estately "hippie" description of New Hampshire:
"Some of the pot and patchouli to be smelled in New Hampshire is no doubt wafting over the border from Vermont, but The Granite State is still very much a hippie stronghold. Per capita, it has the third most Grateful Dead fans, the second most patchouli products for sale on Etsy, the fifth most co-ops, and the 7th most communes. It’s basically Vermont with deodorant on."
