📰 News we're reading

1. Community Power Coalition Of NH Raising Portsmouth Power Rate To 14.663 Cents Per kWh Feb. 1 (patch.com) — Portsmouth residents will see Portsmouth Community Power’s default electricity rate rise to 14.663 cents per kWh from February through July, higher than Eversource’s 11.3-cent rate. City officials stress that customers can freely switch between Portsmouth Community Power and Eversource, choose greener power options, and that long-term goals include stronger buying power, more renewables, and support for the city’s climate plan.

2. Home insurance is the canary in the coalmine for economic effect of climate change (concordmonitor.com) — A longtime Portsmouth resident’s basement was inundated in what he calls the worst local flood he’s seen, forcing costly repairs and changes to protect against rising seas. A Portsmouth realtor says clients are suddenly scrutinizing flood maps and insurance costs, as climate change and federal flood insurance uncertainty begin reshaping the Seacoast housing market and buyer behavior.

3. U.S. Navy to use AI to speed up shipbuilding (dredgewire.com) — Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is highlighted as an early winner in the Navy’s new AI-driven Ship OS program, cutting some material review steps from weeks to under an hour. The initiative, built on Palantir software, aims to streamline shipbuilding nationwide by improving planning, reducing bottlenecks, and stabilizing production schedules across submarine and surface ship programs.

4. NH legislators propose bills to add transparency to immigration efforts in state (nhpr.org) — Two Democratic lawmakers from Portsmouth are backing bills to add transparency and limits around how New Hampshire agencies cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, including 287(g) agreements and local jail use. The proposals, mostly from Democrats with some GOP support, aim to boost public reporting and ensure local taxpayers aren’t subsidizing federal immigration work.
