📰 News we're reading

1. Portsmouth schools eye $70.2M budget, plan to keep modular classrooms (seacoastonline.com) — Portsmouth school officials are proposing a nearly $70.2 million budget for the coming fiscal year, up about 4.5%, while planning to keep modular classrooms at Dondero Elementary at least one more year. Administrators warn a few staff positions may be reduced or repurposed to manage costs, and the School Board will hold several workshops before a tentative Feb. 10 budget vote and June citywide approval.

2. Portsmouth project: Apartments and health club in, co-living out (seacoastonline.com) — A major redevelopment is planned for 134 Pleasant St. in downtown Portsmouth, adding new one- and two-bedroom apartments, a health club, physical therapy space, and underground parking while keeping bank services on site. The project has Historic District Commission approval with conditions and still needs Planning Board sign-off, as the city continues to pursue more housing, including separate co-living projects.

3. Campaign for Maura Sullivan announces fundraising numbers for Q4 2025 (wmur.com) — Portsmouth Democrat Maura Sullivan is touting a strong fundraising quarter, bringing in more than $520,000 and starting 2026 with $1.1 million on hand for her 1st Congressional District run. Her campaign highlights many small-dollar donations, a pledge to reject corporate PAC money, and the hiring of a new campaign manager with prior congressional win experience.

4. Fri, Jan 9 (nhgazette.com) — Portsmouth shows up here in a 1766 flashback, when a local “grand mob” forced stamp master George Meserve to resign and raised what’s described as the colonies’ first “No Stamp” flag. The rest of the piece is a left-leaning historical timeline of notable events that occurred on January 9 in other places and eras.
