Portsmouth By the Scrap Metal Pile?

The Port of New Hampshire has the only public access, general cargo terminal on the Piscataqua River.

New Hampshire Public Radio has a report on the perennial pressures on the state's only deep-water port, specifically on the scrap metal business off Market Street.

Grimmel Industries' lease expires in December, and NHPR reports on some nearby residents envisioning a different type of working waterfront.

Port directors have pointed out in the past that operations there are not at odds with the parcel's historic use. Another view is that some abutters are like residents moving into a home next to an interstate, and then complaining about the noise of the traffic.

The Division of Ports & Harbors, which is part of the Pease Development Authority, operates the only public access, general cargo terminal on the Piscataqua River.

The Port of New Hampshire's Market Street terminal includes a 50,000 square-foot covered warehouse and on-site rail access, and cargo business includes scrap metal, salt, construction materials and container cargo.
