Portsmouth To Collect Hazardous Household Waste
Portsmouth-area residents are asked to bring in their unwanted hazardous chemicals for safe disposal this Saturday.
PORTSMOUTH, NH — This Saturday, the city will be collecting unwanted household hazardous waste products, including gasoline, antifreeze, oil-based paints, oven cleaners, used motor oil and more. The hazardous waste collection day is taking place from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday, May 18, at the Public Works, 680 Peverly Hill Road in Portsmouth. The collection day is open to residents of Portsmouth, Greenland and Newington. Proof of residency will be required.
According to city officials, hazardous chemicals that are not property disposed of can injure residents or pets, and can harm the environment or potentially contaminate drinking water. Examples of chemicals being accepted include: disinfectants, photographic chemicals, pesticides, paint, bathroom cleaner, solvents, poisons, pool chemicals, acids and corrosives.
No latex pain will be accepted at the collection event. Latex paint may be solidified with cat litter, sawdust, speedy dry, or by opening the can and letting the paint dry completely. Then, it can be disposed of either at the recycling center or through regular trash pickup, according to city officials.
