Funds for 'Portsmouth Downtown Historic District' Nomination Up for Vote

The $157,500 contract would prepare the National Register of Historic Places nomination.

The governor and Executive Council on Wednesday will consider authorizing a $157,500 contract for the preparation of a National Register of Historic Places nomination for a Portsmouth Downtown Historic District.

The state Department of Cultural Resources recommends the contract be entered into with The Public Archaeology Laboratory of Pawtucket, R.I., effective July 1, 2014.

The nomination is being prepared as mitigation for the replacement of the 1923 Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine.

When the historic review work is completed, the nomination papers will be submitted to the National Park Service for proposed listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Peter Michaud, of the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources, told the Portsmouth City Council last month that the "downtown district" could be named to the National Register by 2016, if all goes according to schedule.
