Relative of Brentwood Shooter Recalls Troubled Man

Governor Hassan has directed flags to half-staff through Officer Steve Arkell's funeral.

A relative of the man accused of fatally shooting Brentwood Police Officer Steve Arkell on Monday tells New England Cable News that he was a troubled person.

The sister-in-law to Walter Nolan, 86, whose 47-year-old son Michael was identified as the shooter May 12, says the younger Nolan "just wasn't right," NECN reported.

The community continues to mourn the death of Arkell, a father of two who worked as a part-time officer in Brentwood for about 15 years. Investigators continue to assess the crime scene at 46 Mill Pond Road in Brentwood, a small New Hampshire town in Rockingham County.

Attorney General Joseph Foster and Associate Attorney General Jane Young said May 13 that Michael Nolan immediately fired upon Arkell as he entered the house and before the house exploded.

The bodies of Michael Nolan and Arkell were recovered at the scene.

Gov. Maggie Hassan directed flags to half-staff through Officer Arkell's funeral. President Obama issued flags to half-staff May 15 in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
