Rochester Dump Truck Driver Arrested For DUI After Fatal Ossipee Crash

OSSIPEE, NH — An 80-year-old Ossipee woman was killed after police say a dump truck lost control, rolled over, and struck the 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe she was driving.

Ossipee police and fire and rescue responded to a reported crash on Route 28 Friday just before noon. Their preliminary investigation determined that a 2005 Mack dump truck driven by Robert Gifford, 54, of Rochester, collided with a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Dorothy Marshall of Ossipee.

The truck rolled over and struck Marshall, who was traveling in the opposite direction in her SUV. Gifford was not injured, and Marshall was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries suffered in the crash.

The subsequent investigation determined that, according to state police, Gifford was traveling northbound on Route 28 when he lost control of the dump truck.

Due to the severity of the crash, the Ossipee Police Department requested assistance from the State Police. Troopers assigned to the Troop E and Troop G barracks and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit responded to assist with the investigation.

Gifford was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated; he is being held on bail at the Carroll County Department of Corrections pending arraignment scheduled for Monday, according to state police.

Traffic was diverted for several hours from Route 28 due to the crash investigation.

Troopers were assisted on the scene by the Ossipee Police Department, the Ossipee Corner Fire and Rescue, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wolfeboro Police Department.
