Shaheen, Ayotte Cheer Air Pollution Ruling

The senators say the "Cross-State Pollution Rule" will help protect New Hampshire from out-of-state polluters.

U.S. Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) applauded the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to uphold the "Cross-State Air Pollution Rule."

Shaheen issued a statement on the air quality ruling:

"Today’s Supreme Court decision will allow us in New Hampshire and throughout New England to breathe a little bit easier. Studies show that the EPA’s rule will particularly help states like ours which have too long suffered the public health consequences of pollution from out of state energy production. Cleaner air will help protect the health and welfare of our citizens and our environment, but as a whole our country must move toward clean energy production. We must invest in clean energy because that will not only help reduce pollution but also create jobs. I will continue to fight in the Senate to make those types of investments on behalf of our environment and our economy."

Senator Ayotte said the court decision will clear the way for a clean-air regulation to move forward to protect New Hampshire and other states that are downwind from power plants and polluters in the Mid-west.

Ayotte said,

"Air pollution doesn’t stop at state borders, and New Hampshire shouldn’t be the tailpipe for pollutants from out-of-state power plants. Without this rule in place, New Hampshire would be unable to achieve national clean air standards because of air pollution that is outside of the state’s regulatory control,” said Senator Ayotte. “It’s a matter of common sense to ensure that one state’s emissions aren’t unduly harming another state’s air quality, and I’m pleased that the rule will move forward.
