Shipyard Building Evacuated Due to High CO Levels

A car parked too close to the building elevated carbon monoxide levels.

A building at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was evacuated on Thursday morning due to elevated carbon monoxide levels.

According to Public Affairs Officer Danna Eddy, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Fire Department responded to a report of a smell of exhaust in Building 79, a waterfront facility, around 8:10 a.m.

The exhaust smell was caused by an idling vehicle near the building's air intake. The intake of exhaust elevated the carbon monoxide levels inside one area of the building.

As a precautionary measure, Eddy said the building was evacuated and ventilated. No one was injured, and employees have returned to their work spaces.
