USS Thresher Memorial Dedicated
Hundreds of family members of USS Thresher sailors and civilian workers gather to dedicate new flag pole at the Kittery Traffic Circle.

Family members and friends of the 129 sailors and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers who perished on the USS Thresher (SSN 593) 50 years ago dedicated a new flag pole memorial in Kittery, Maine on Sunday, according to television news station WCSH of Portland, Maine.
WSCH reported the 129-foot flag pole located in the middle of the traffic circle represents one foot for each man who was lost on April 10, 1963, when the nuclear submarine was conducting deep sea diving trials off of Cape Cod, Mass., and sank.
The memorial dedication followed the 50th annual USS Thresher Memorial service held at Portsmouth High School on Saturday where more than 950 family members, Navy submarine veterans and friends of those lost lost on the nuclear submarine gathered to remembered them.
