Which Portsmouth Restaurants seek Sidewalk Alcohol Service?

Two newer Port City restaurants are among those applying under the "Sidewalk Cafés Providing Alcohol Service" policy.

Seven Portsmouth restaurants have applications before the City Council on April 7 seeking approval to serve alcohol in a sidewalk setting in the 2014 season.

Portsmouth's "Sidewalk Cafés Providing Alcohol Service" policy stemmed from a pilot three years ago. Approved applicants must meet certain conditions, including, of course, the OK from the State Liquor Commission. They shall also provide general liability and alcohol service liability insurance of at least $3 million.

According to the City Council agenda for Monday night's meeting, here are applicants seeking an "area service agreement" with the city:

  • BRGR Bar (on private sidewalk, 34 Portwalk Place)
The agreements spell out a number of conditions, including that tables in the sidewalk area in question must be cleared of all food and alcoholic beverages by 10:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and by 10 p.m. on Sunday - and those being served with alcohol must be ordering a "substantial meal."

The license fee to the city depends on the square footage of sidewalk. For the seven applicants on Monday's agenda, the range is from $3,240 (Surf) to $5,700 (Popovers).

The Portsmouth City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. on April 7, following a non-public session, starting at 6, with counsel to discuss personnel matters.
