Salem won't apply for a federal grant to cover the cost of a new $1.2 million ladder truck because less than $17 million is available for that kind of fire department purchase, according to the Union Leader.
The paper has reported that Fire Chief Kevin Breen has told selectmen that the grant is also only awarded if a municipality has no other established funding sources. Salem has already budgeted for the ladder truck, so Breen said Salem shouldn't purse the grant because not only the budget prevent the town from getting it, but the act of applying for the grant will prevent them from seeking other equipment grants from the federal government.
