House to Vote on Casino Bill

Bill would legalize two casinos in NH with a total of 5,000 slots and 240 table games.

The state House of Representatives is scheduled Wednesday to vote on a bill to legalize casino gambling in New Hampshire.

The bill would allow two casinos for a total of 5,000 slot machines and up to 240 table games.

The bill  was previously passed by the state Senate, 15 to 9, but it faces a House that has never endorsed casino gambling. Opponents say if the House would not commit to one casino, as proposed in previous bills, it should not embrace legislation calling for two casinos. Supporters argue the state would be passing up a major revenue source, where Granite Staters are going to Massachusetts and Connecticut to gamble.

A wild card in the latest debate is a recent court ruling calling the state's Medicaid Enhancement Tax unconstitutional; some in the House say expanded gambling could plug a hole in the state's budget.

The House convenes at 10 a.m. April 30.
