SALEM, NH — During a special enforcement initiative on Friday by the New Hampshire State Police, dozens of violations were issued against drivers on Interstate 93, including a charge against a Massachusetts man accused of driving 128 miles per hour.

The enforcement initiative was part of an effort by state police, utilizing ground forces and aircraft, to stop drivers due to what officials called an “overwhelming increase of speeding and hazardous driving behavior in the area,” Amber Lagace, the public information officer for the department, said. During the operation, 56 violations were recorded, including 21 drivers clocked at more than 90 mph and seven at more than 100 mph. Other violations included following too closely, use of an electronic mobile device, negligent driving, and move-over law violations, she said.

Around 8:15 a.m., one trooper, working the northbound side of the highway from aircraft, observed a vehicle speeding at a high rate. Lagace said the vehicle was clocked at 128 mph. That trooper radioed to others on the ground, and the vehicle was stopped. The driver — Reginald Carter, 48, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, was arrested on a reckless driving charge. He’s due in Salem District Court on April 18 for arraignment.

“Motorists traveling on New Hampshire highways can expect to see initiatives like this being conducted throughout the state in response to the increasing number of traffic violations and crashes on New Hampshire highways,” Lagace said. “The use of state police aircraft allowed troopers to effectively monitor and enforce traffic laws from above, resulting in a significant reduction in reckless driving and other dangerous behaviors.”

The NHSP Special Enforcement Unit has been focusing on traffic laws, highway safety, and reducing the number of crashes in New Hampshire, by utilizing technology and tools to monitor and enforce laws.

“The unit will continue to conduct similar operations throughout the State to ensure the safety of all citizens on New Hampshire highways,” she said.
