Man on Trial for Stealing, Gambling Elderly Woman's $48K
Prosecutors say the man preyed on the victim's declining health in order to fund a gambling spree in Salem.

A Dracut, Mass., man is on trial for stealing $48,000 from the bank account of an 80-year-old woman in order to go on what authorities claim was a gambling spree at a variety of gaming establishments, including Rockingham Park in Salem, according to the Union Leader.
If convicted, James Hughes, 53, could face between 7 1/2 and 15 years in state prison for theft and fraudulent use of a credit card, according to the Union Leader. Hughes' victim — who has since passed away — was reportedly in declining health and was unable to drive or leave home on her own when Hughes began using her ATM card in March 2009 not long after he started running errands for the woman.
