In an effort to provide a more efficient service to residents, the Salem Police Department announced today the activation of a new automated telephone answering system.
According to police, the new system will allow dispatchers to focus their efforts on actual emergency situations, as well as the dispatching of police units.
Those who call the Salem Police Department business line at (603)-893-1911 will now reach an automated message providing extensions for specific services, divisions and units, along with dial by name departmental contacts.
Callers can also dial '0' at any time to speak with a dispatcher.
According to Salem Police, the Communications Center currently fields about 8,000 calls per month.
The automated system will also allow police to make important announcements to keep callers informed of major accidents and the cancellation or rescheduling of events.
The system was purchased solely with the Salem Police Department's Asset Forfeiture Funds.
