Salem Schools May Help Children of Divorce Through New Policy
The proposed change in enrollment policy would benefit local students going through a difficult home situation.

The Salem School Board will decide next week whether to, in effect, make divorces easier on local students, as a policy is under consideration that will allow children of parents going through a divorce to remain in Salem schools even if they no longer live in town, according to the Union Leader.
“It’s probably beneficial to the student to maintain some consistency within the school system, but given the laws and requirements, students [currently] attend the school where they in effect sleep,” Superintendent Michael Delahanty told the Union Leader, also stating that new state laws would allow students to remain in Salem schools as long as a parenting plan is agreed upon and one of the parents still lives in town. “We’ve often had to tell children that they have to move to a new school district, particularly if they are living with a custodial parent in a non-sharing situation.”
