SALEM, NH — A Massachusetts fugitive was arrested at a Salem motel Sunday following a SWAT standoff, according to police. Joseph Haynes, 30, of Tewksbury, was wanted to connection with a police chase and is a person of interest in a shooting earlier this month in Haverhill, according to Salem Police Capt. Joel Dolan. Haynes also had a warrant out of Florida and was believed to be in possession of a stolen vehicle out of the state.

Dolan said at about 9:45 a.m., an officer found the stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the Park View Inn on South Broadway. Officers later learned Haynes was in a motel room.

"Numerous attempts were made to speak with (Haynes) and he refused to leave the room or confirm who was in the room with him," Dolan said in a statement. "After several failed attempts to have the male leave the room and due to the seriousness of his alleged crimes the Southern New Hampshire Special Operations Unit was activated. After several hours of discussions with the Crisis Negotiators (Haynes) was taken into custody."
