School 'So Thankful' for New Playground After Arson

This September, Salem's Haigh Elementary School proudly re-opened their playground just in time for the start of the 2013-2014 school year. Over $25,000 was raised by the local community and local businesses to replace theHaighElementary Schoolplayground that was destroyed in a fire in August 2012.

On August 24, 2012, reports of smoke rising from the playground at Haigh Elementary School came in to local authorities. Though Firefighters got the flames down within 15 minutes, the mostly wooden playground set was destroyed. After a year of fundraising, HaighElementary Schoolhad raised over $20,000 from the local community as well as generous donors such asCanobieLakePark, Salem Youth Soccer, RE/MAX Insight and The Mortgage Specialists, Inc. However, they still needed an additional $5,000 to purchase their Playground Committee's new playground equipment of choice in time for the first day of school.

"The Mortgage Specialists, Inc. got wind that we had not raised enough funds to purchase the equipment we were hoping for before school started," said Christine Honey-Nadeau, Principal of Haigh Elementary School. "They kindly stepped in and generously donated the additional $5,000 needed to make this happen. Their total donation was $6,500. Without their donation, the playground would have been a much smaller piece of equipment. We are so thankful to them and all of the donations we received. "
