Spots Still Available In Salem PD Citizens Police Academy Course

Participants will learn about different divisions within the department and take part in ride-alongs with patrol officers.

SALEM, NH —The Salem Police Department has announced that openings remain available for this fall's 12th annual Citizens Police Academy class, which will begin next month.

The weekly course will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from Sept. 13 to Nov. 22 at Salem Police Department Headquarters, located at 9 Veterans Memorial Parkway. The class is free and open to people 18 years of age or older who are citizens of Salem or members of the Salem Exchange Club.

Applications are available online and include questions about criminal history. The department said filling out the application does not guarantee a position in the course.

In the academy, participants will get an in-depth look at the functions of different divisions within the department and aspects of law enforcement. There will be hands-on experiences, including ride-alongs with patrol officers.

"Graduates from the Citizens Police Academy will have a better understanding of the operation of the Salem Police Department. They will also have a greater awareness and appreciation of the challenges and decisions faced by the members of the Salem Police Department each and every day," the department said in a statement.

The department's statement added: "Community involvement is the most powerful force any law enforcement agency has in its fight against crime."
